What Is a HEX Color Code?
A HEX color code is a compact way of writing a color as three pairs of hexadecimal digits, one each for red, green and blue light. Because computer screens mix red, green and blue light to produce every color you see, a HEX code like #AC3636 is really just a shorthand for exact amounts of each channel — in this case a deep, muted red. HEX color codes are the standard used across HTML, CSS and most design software because they are short, unambiguous and easy to copy between tools.
How to Find a HEX Color Code
There are a few reliable ways to find the HEX code of a color. Type a value directly into the field at the top of this page, drag inside the visual color picker until the preview matches what you're after, or upload a photo and let the extractor pull out its dominant colors automatically. Designers picking a color from a screenshot or a brand asset usually reach for the picker; developers matching an existing style usually already have the code and just need it converted.
How to Convert HEX to RGB
Converting HEX to RGB means splitting the six-digit code into three two-digit pairs and reading each pair as a base-16 number instead of base-10. #AC3636 becomes AC, 36 and 36, which convert to 172, 54 and 54 — the RGB values shown in the color spaces table above. This tool performs that conversion instantly, along with the reverse conversion from RGB back to HEX.
HEX vs RGB vs HSL
All three formats describe the same underlying color, just organized differently. HEX packs red, green and blue into a single compact string that's easy to paste. RGB lists the same three channels as plain base-10 numbers, which is often easier to read and edit by hand. HSL instead describes a color by hue, saturation and lightness, which maps more naturally to how people think about color — "a slightly darker, less saturated red" is a small HSL adjustment. Most design tools let you switch freely between all three.
How to Choose the Right Color Palette
A strong palette usually starts from one anchor color and builds outward using a defined relationship rather than guesswork. Complementary pairs create contrast and energy, analogous groups feel calm and cohesive, and a monochromatic set built from shades and tints of a single hue reads as clean and controlled. The palette generator above can build any of these relationships automatically from whichever color you're currently working with.

Color Shades and Tints
A shade is created by mixing a color with black, which lowers its lightness while keeping the same hue — useful for depth, shadows and hover states. A tint does the opposite, mixing in white to lighten the color for backgrounds and subtle accents. The shades and tints section above generates both automatically for whatever color is currently selected, from 50% darker to 50% lighter.
